Research / Gapping audit
FreeA gapping audit of my own bag
Ten thousand shots, one question: does every club in my bag have a job?
I keep a distance model built from every usable full swing in my archive, weighted toward recent sessions. In August 2026 it covered 12 clubs. Here is what it says.

The irons are tight
From the 9 iron to the 5 iron, each club adds 11 to 13 yards and the middle-50% bands barely overlap. That is what a well-lofted iron set should look like at my speed (about 85 to 91 mph through the irons).
The wedges are not
Sand wedge to gap wedge is +19 yards and gap wedge to pitching wedge is +20. The gap wedge is also the widest-playing wedge, with a middle 50% of 93 to 112 yards. Inside 125 yards, where I most need a precise number, I have the least even coverage. I fill it today with partial swings (my wedge matrix), but a loft change or a fourth wedge would make full swings cover it.
The long end has a hole
The 3 hybrid (197 stock, small sample) to the 5 wood (228) is a 31-yard jump, and the 5 wood plays wide: its middle 50% runs from 221 to 253. In August 2026 I tested a 7 wood: 12 shots at 210 yards average carry, which lands right in that hole.
What I would change
- Re-space the wedge lofts so full swings land closer to 12 to 15 yards apart.
- Keep testing the 7 wood as the club between hybrid and 5 wood.
- Rebuild the hybrid number with more shots before trusting it.
